{"id":89,"date":"2006-05-10T20:56:00","date_gmt":"2006-05-10T20:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heartwoodcollective.com\/infolantern\/2006\/05\/10\/visiting-people-in-plazes\/"},"modified":"2006-05-10T20:56:00","modified_gmt":"2006-05-10T20:56:00","slug":"visiting-people-in-plazes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heartwoodcollective.com\/infolantern\/2006\/05\/10\/visiting-people-in-plazes\/","title":{"rendered":"visiting people in Plazes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I was checking my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/vielmetti.typepad.com\/vacuum\/\">Ed Vielmetti&#8217;s blog<\/a>, and noticed that his <a href=\"http:\/\/beta.plazes.com\/home\/\">Plazes<\/a> gadget on the side of his site had him listed as being at a cafe less than a block away from me.  A few days before we had been talking about <a href=\"http:\/\/vielmetti.typepad.com\/vacuum\/2006\/04\/neighborhood_in.html\">neighborhood informatics<\/a>, and having had a few more thoughts on the subject, I decided to wander down to the cafe and see if he really was where Plazes claimed.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve used Plazes a number of times to announce my whereabouts to other people using Plazes, but I&#8217;d never really taken any action based on the location information that the service provides by opting to make the face-to-face connection.  As I walked through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gsgeorge\/70154007\/\">Nickels Arcade<\/a> and turned on State Street, I was wondering what the social protocol was for going to say hi to someone when you know where they are, but they don&#8217;t know that you know they are there&#8230;  Maybe it is polite to IM them first, and let them know you are stopping by?
