laying out the levels of systems (one dimension)

These sketches are part of working out a way to frame the information the hubbub tool is intended to present.  A work in progress.  These current sketches feel a bit over-labored, so hopefully this gets more refined as it goes.

After talking to Ed Vielmetti, realized the native framework for showing this dimension is simply a map. People are used to (through Google) seeing the scale controls on the left side, so this sketch starts to get at that - switching the scale icons to the left side.
